Senior Advisor

Deborah Cosey-Lane has joined LAVA Strategies as Senior Advisor. A dedicated advocate and political strategist who has dedicated her life to the labor movement and the fight for social and economic justice, she has served as the Secretary/Treasurer of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308 (Rail Transportation for Chicago Transit Authority), where she has used her position to champion the rights of her fellow union members and uplift the voices of marginalized communities.

An experienced political operative, she has served a senior political advisor to Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Campaign Manager to Congressman Jonathan Jackson. She serves on numerous boards and commissions, including the Chicago Women’s March, Illinois Women in Leadership, and the Illinois Reparations Board.

Deborah's passion for labor education began in 1993 when she attended her first union steward class at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Throughout her nearly three-decade membership with the union, she has consistently prioritized helping workers understand the importance of unions and the labor movement's historical significance. She is committed to ensuring that everyone has equal access to education and opportunities for economic advancement.

Raised in a family deeply connected to their church and community, Deborah's strong foundation in faith and music has fueled her passion for empowering others. As the proud mother of Errin, Erwin, and Nicholas, she draws inspiration from her own experiences of feeling powerless and overcoming fear.
